It would probably be considered inappropriate if asked so directly in a job interview. Yet behind this deliberately provocative question lies an interesting reflection on life journeys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We all know people who were born in one town, completed their education there, met their partner, raised a family, built a career and spent most of their lives in the same place. Others have followed a very different path. They left their region or country, sometimes out of necessity, sometimes by choice. They seized a professional opportunity, followed a partner, pursued studies abroad or simply gave in to their curiosity. They discovered other cultures, learned new languages, met a life partner from a different cultural background or one who spoke a different language, and built new networks. And along the way, they moved home several times, a natural consequence of those choices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-medium is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"210\" src=\"https:\/\/gancipartners.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/moving-boxes-living-room-300x210.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-53862\" style=\"width:366px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We are not suggesting that one of these life paths is better than the other. Each has its own strengths. Stability allows people to build deep relationships, put down lasting roots in a familiar environment and benefit from valuable social capital. By contrast, mobility brings people face to face with the unknown. It requires people to adapt, learn quickly and step outside their comfort zone on a regular basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In our executive search work, we often observe that leaders who have experienced different geographical, cultural or professional environments develop a particular form of agility. They learn to navigate uncertainty, understand different realities and challenge their own assumptions. This is what we might call cultural intelligence, a vital skill in a globalised world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ultimately, changing home is less about an address than a mindset. It often reflects a willingness to take calculated risks, seize opportunities, push beyond one&#8217;s limits and embrace the unknown.
