NOT EVEN AFRAID !

by | Jun 3, 2024

The privilege of age seems, among other things, to be the ability to take a step back, to know oneself better, to better manage one’s emotions and finally to better manage certain fears. There is, however, a bug in the matrix, because we are not afraid of the same things at 20 or 50 years old. Bottom line, the fear is still there, it has just changed form and subject.

We could estimate that this feeling, as unpleasant as it may be, functions as a revealer of a situation which should alert us and make us particularly attentive, such as fever for a virus for example. A sort of “warning” telling us that something abnormal is happening. We still say to ourselves that with a little bottle and, it is true, unfortunately a few wrinkles, the concept is clear and that we could do without unpleasant symptoms to understand that the situation deserves our attention. But no ! Our Cro-Magnonesque DNA decides otherwise and continues to alert us so intensely.

We were discussing this theme with one of our clients, realizing, with a little bitterness, how many private or professional decisions we make or do not make out of fear or, even worse, out of fear. anticipating. We also thought that managing a team sometimes boiled down to managing the fears of your colleagues.

A vast subject which, in our profession as recruiters, sometimes takes surprising forms. For example, the choice of whether or not to accept a job offer. What are the real motivational elements behind a career choice, behind the choice to leave one organization or join another?

Far be it from us to involve a psychoanalyst in a recruitment process, there are often far too many people to talk to. But taking the time to breathe, to do some “light” introspection could prove useful, or at least interesting.

This is also true when a company must choose to make an offer to its future employee. Is this choice always based on elements of skills and personality? Is it imaginable that other, less acceptable criteria would come into play?

It is always said that courage is overcoming one’s fears, but wouldn’t it also be, first of all, trying to understand them?
